History
In 2001, due to budget constraints, funding for Coronado Middle School sports was discontinued by the Coronado Unified School District. At that time, Islander Sports Foundation, a 501-c-3 non-profit organization, stepped in and ever since has run the entire sports program at the middle school level.
Program Philosophy
The ISF mission is to promote educational opportunities for all students through athletics; to ensure that athletic participation is financially viable for all students; and to promote, maintain and operate athletic facilities for student and community use. The driving force behind the ISF/CMS Sports Program is that interscholastic competition is important at the middle school age level.

Eligibility
ISF/CMS sports are open to CUSD registered students only. Additionally, in collaboration with the Coronado Middle School’s Pelican Way Code of Conduct, each student-athlete must be eligible both academically and with their citizenship grades to participate in games against other schools.
Please refer to the CMS Pelican Way: Ethics in Sports form for more details.
Physical Exams
All students must have a “current” (defined as within 1 calendar year) physical exam, administered and signed by a doctor, to be eligible to participate in the ISF/CMS Sports Program.
THIS INCLUDES PARTICIPATION IN TRYOUTS. Athletes may use any physical exam completed within the calendar year as long as it does not expire within their current sport’s season.
Registration Packet includes the following REQUIRED forms
All forms can be downloaded on www.islandersportsfoundation.com
Financial Information
The 2008-2009 registration fee is $110 per sport per child which goes towards paying officials, transportation costs, as well as purchasing uniforms and equipment. As the ISF/ CMS Sports Program has never denied a child the ability to compete at the middle school level, scholarships are granted to families who request them.
New Policies and Procedure for 2008-2009 ISF/CMS Sports
- Only those athletes who present a complete Registration Packet at the CMS Sports Registration meeting will be placed on a Pelican Sport Roster. Incomplete packets will not be accepted.
- Athletes who attend the CMS Sports Registration meeting with incomplete paperwork will be placed on a WAITING LIST.
- Deadline for submitting a complete Registration Packet is ONE WEEK after each CMS Sports Registration meeting. Players will be ineligible to participate in a sport during that current season if the deadline is not met.
- For Team Sports, athletes will have mandatory tryouts/assessments. Any athlete that does NOT attend these tryout/assessments will be INELIGIBLE for ‘A’ team placement, although athlete may be moved up during the season at coach’s discretion.
- Athletes who have completed paperwork at sign up are granted a 2 week grace period to switch sports, understanding that if they miss the tryouts for Team sports the above rules apply regarding team placement.
- Athletes may only register for ONE SPORT per season.
- To encourage team camaraderie, athletes are provided (and are required to utilize) bus transportation TO all AWAY games. However, parents must arrange the return of their student-athlete from away games. Team managers will be assisting in ensuring all students are transported home.
Playing and Coaching Philosophy
To accommodate as many athletes as possible, ISF/CMS Sports may designate not only an “A” team, but also a “B” and “C” (or developmental) team. It is the philosophy of ISF/ CMS Sports that the “A” team is the most competitive of the levels, typically with fewer players on the squad and the best athletes in that sport, regardless of their grade in school. Playing time at the more competitive “A” team level will be more reflective of a student‘s ability in that particular sport and equal playing time for the student-athlete is not mandated.
